“Going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty to Help Our Veterans”

At a time when there was a critical need for registered nurses, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars established the first $1,000 scholarship that was awarded to a senior nursing student.  They also set up a trust fund to insure that adequate funds would be available to perpetuate an annual Nursing Scholarship.  In doing so, we have not only served the medical community but the community as a whole, through aid to education.

Over the years, the generosity of our Auxiliaries has allowed more senior nursing students to receive a scholarship.  This year there will be three scholarships awarded.  First place will receive $2,000, second place recipient will receive $1,500 and third place will receive $1,000.

Statewide Project: In an effort for the Nursing Scholarship to become perpetual, we are asking each Auxiliary to hold a fundraiser. Mail your proceeds to the Department Treasurer and earmark your check “Nursing Scholarship Fundraiser.”  I will give a special chairman’s award. It will be a plaque to the Auxiliary in each membership division with the most unique fundraiser. You must submit the Year-End Report and you must also “Honor” the nurses in your community in some special manner.

I will contact the Directors of all accredited nursing education schools and provide them with all the details and requirements and ask that they make this information available to all their Junior nursing students.  Application forms will be available with the first initial letter.

As is tradition, the winning applicants will be invited to attend our Department Convention to receive the scholarship awards and meet the Great Ladies of Texas, who have made this scholarship possible.
